Practice firms were developped as a means to fight unemployment, the Central Office (in french: Centrale Suisse des Entreprises d'Entraînement) was created by the Société suisse des employés de commerce (SSEC), a mission accorded given by the Secrétariat d'Etat à l'Economie (SECO). The initial goal was to fill the needs of the few first practice firms, to simulate an economy-like network as close as possible to reality. Through its services and advice, the CSEE has contributed to the current level and state of the practice firms.

By joining the international network EuroPEN in 1997, the CSEE also offers a link to its swiss practice firms to more than 5500 other firms throughout the world, who are working according to the same principles.
